May Loan ka? Ako Wala! =)

When I was a lieutenant, that was the one and only time I applied for a loan. I forgot where I used it for, but I do remember computing for the interest I paid AFPSLAI, lumaki ang mata ko sa laki ng porsyento! Ganito ba talaga ang cost ng mangutang? So I told myself never again!
Through the years in the service, I have had the opportunity to sign loan forms of soldiers – I will perfunctorily ask them what the money is for. They would always answer – kelangan pampa-kasal, pampanganak ng misis, pangpagamot sa magulang/anak/biyenan, pangbili ng lupa, pagawa ng bahay, etc etc. Of course those are standard answers, but you will hear other stories like their loaned money ay pinang-sugal, taya sa sabong, pinang-inom o good time para bida sa mga kapwa sundalo, ginastos sa fiesta sa bayan nila para sikat, pinang-invest sa pyramiding scheme, etc.
If true or not, at that time, I thought alam naman siguro nila ginagawa nila. Pera nila yan. But whenever I see their payslip and their take-home pay amounting to the minimum only of 4200php a month, I cannot help but think "how can they live with this budget? 'Di ba 3 anak nun, ang 1 baby pa?" I would just stare helplessly at pikit-matang pipirmahan ang loan form.
Balik tayo sa unang tanong. Bakit ako walang loan? You might think malaki naman sweldo ko kasi opisyal.
Next year manganganak kunwari misis mo.
You can save yourself many problems and lessen your stress by planning for the future. Most of our activities in the family are routine or happen in some sort of a cycle where we can predict the most probable outcome. If we can prepare and save for future expenses, that is a better option than loaning the money.
Mababaon ka lang sa utang and it will be just one repetitive cycle of loaning again and again because you do not have enough. or will never be if YOU DON'T DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Wake up and get yourself out of that debt hole! Mag-isip. Mag-plano. Mag-ipon.
Now na!

Ang inyong lingkod,
Balitangsink
Kapag may kaalaman, may kalayaan.

  1. nice one, mango nectar! ma'am tamang tama... endorse ko ito sa kasundaluhan namin... although i would like to suggest sa next post mo. alam mo naman yung iba gusto ng "vaultfiles", maganda siguro ma'am may sample "plans" ka (believe it or not, madaming hindi marunong mag plano... kaya nga madaming nagloloan eh hehehe). kung siguro meron kayong example, para mas maliwanagan sila... tapos borrow ko ang tips mo para sa next TI&E (with due acknowledgement to you, of course, hehehe)... keep it up ma'am! Meron na ulit akong "mango nectar" na susundan! :)

  2. planning is the number one element among other functions of management.

gone were the old school thought that the wife holds the money -this is no longer acceptable. he or she who learns and knows better how to manage money matters has the right to hold the family purse.

dapat ma-educate talaga tropa natin regarding planning, dahil dito nagsimula ang lahat ng programa natin sa buhay.

    1. thank you sir! both husband and wife should have the responsibility in financial planning. traditional nga po talaga na ang wife is the one who holds the budget. but the husband should provide leadership sa pamilya -- purpose, direction, motivation sabi nga ang meaning nito. kaya dapat lang po maging maalam din ang mga lalaki sa pagba-budget and personal financial management =)

  4. I have my first loan with GSIS to feel how it is to have a loan, that was more than a decade ago, i had my real loan with afpslai after almost 20 yrs in the service. My secret is very simple, yes very simple and that is "live a simple life". I had my first cellphone, an analogue, when palabas na mga digital. I even felt cheated when during my next R&R (after three months), the analogue phones sell two for the same price i bought 3 mos ago. Why did i finally have a loan from afsplai after 18 years in the service, I bought my first car (second hand siempre). It was the only time that i realized that i really needed a car. That's living a simple life even i see my friends na dalawa na kotse, may bahay pa.
The things is we have a culture of loaning which affects the way we perform, tama ka sa sinabi andami reasons ng magloan. What i did was to set a higher take home net pay. Pera nila yon pero pag ang reason for the loan was to shoulder the expenses sa panganganak ng misis then dapat may nakaprepare na silang pera kasi they have nine months to prepare financially. Di naman yan biglaan. I also encourage them to have their expenses reimbursed, whether travel or hospitalization.

I support your idea of MAGPLANO at MAG-IPON. Its the only way.

    1. tama po kayo sir! if we live simply and within our means, may sobra pa po para maka-ipon pandagdag sa retirement natin o para sa iba pang gusto natin like pambili ng bahay at lupa. malaking bagay din po, bilang isang lider sa unit to impose certain policies like what you did. Kudos po sa inyo sir!
